Hispanic Housing and Education Corporation (HHEC)
was organized in Houston, Texas in 1991 as a non-profit
corporation under Section 501 ( C ) (3) of the Internal
Revenue Code. HHEC was established to provide safe,
sanitary, and decent affordable housing and to initiate
educational programs for low income families.
Many organizations simply address either housing or
social needs; but few combine these services to provide
a holistic approach in addressing the families’ needs.
HHEC has been innovative and resourceful in acquiring
property, designing programs and coordinating
community involvement in providing social and
educational services. Additionally, HHEC and the
Houston Independent School District collaborated on
having formal education on the apartment complex
property. This collaboration is the first of its kind in the
nation.
HHEC acquired a 552 unit apartment complex called Las
Americas Apartments and from 1997 to 2000 HHEC
spent 9.3 million dollars on the renovation of the
complex. This rehabilitation included the construction of
a newly built education facility which is utilized by the
Houston Independent School District. The school
houses 350 students which consist of middle school,Pre-
K and Kindergarten age children.
This model project was recognized by the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
as a model for other low income housing apartments to
emulate.
HHEC collaborates with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation
Department to bring swimming lessons and the summer lunch programs
to the property. We also brought scouting, GED, ESL and a myriad of
other social and educational programs to Las Americas Apartments.
HHEC strongly believes in providing a safe environment for children in
their community and in so doing enhancing the ability for creativity and
education.
Each complex has a community center from which to provide children and
adults with community services that help them to achieve goals of
education and high employment opportunity. In addition, another of
HHEC's goals is to implement a homeowners' program designed to
create self-sufficiency and home ownership for its residents.
Our mission is to assure as well as the insure that generations to come
will have the opportunity to own their own home and to excel to the high
standards of American living. Words like parity, opportunity and the like
will afford Texan families the opportunity to achieve the American dream
of success.
